eIDAS

What is eIDAS?

eIDAS stands for "Electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services." It is a European Union regulation that provides a legal framework for the use of electronic signatures and other trust services within the EU. The regulation ensures that electronic signatures, seals, timestamps, and other trust services are recognized and accepted across all EU member states. This creates a more secure and integrated digital market within Europe, allowing businesses, governments, and citizens to engage in digital transactions with confidence.

What the Regulation and its Implementing Acts Cover:

  • Electronic Identification (eID): It establishes the conditions under which EU member states recognize and accept each other's electronic identification schemes.

  • Trust Services: It covers electronic signatures, electronic seals, electronic time stamps, electronic registered delivery services, and website authentication.

  • Interoperability and Security: It sets standards to ensure that electronic identification and trust services work across borders and are secure.

  • Legal Recognition: It provides that electronic signatures and other trust services have the same legal standing as traditional paper-based processes, provided they meet the requirements of the regulation.

In short, eIDAS and its related regulations establish a standardized and secure way of conducting electronic transactions across the EU, providing legal certainty and fostering trust in digital services.

How exactly is Circularo eIDAS certified?

The Circularo application is certified to eIDAS level Advanced, which means that the service meets the standards set by the European Union's eIDAS regulation for advanced electronic signatures.

An Advanced Electronic Signature (AES) under eIDAS must meet the following criteria:

  1. Uniquely Linked: The signature is uniquely linked to the signatory, ensuring that it is traceable to a specific individual.

  2. Capable of Identifying the Signatory: The signatory can be identified through the signature.

  3. Created Using Electronic Signature Creation Data: The data used to create the signature is under the sole control of the signatory.

  4. Linked to the Data: Any subsequent changes to the data are detectable, ensuring the integrity of the signed document.

This certification provides a higher level of trust and security compared to a simple electronic signature, making it legally recognized across EU member states for various transactions and contracts.
